Alternative liquid source now available through local feed suppliers

Livestock farmers worried about forage quality this winter now have a new option when it comes to improving palatability and energy.
Available to producers in the north of the UK, LactoBoost is a liqu
id product from milk processing and is marketed by Trident Feeds. It’s an exciting development, offering a free flowing, lactose-rich whey permeate feed.
“Utilising new extraction technologies, this product is unique when compared to some whey permeate products as its dry matter is considerably higher at 23%,” says Dr Michael Marsden, Trident Feeds technical manager.
“And, with farmers seeing variable forage quality this winter, particularly with
their first cut silage, this product couldn’t come at a better time for the UK livestock industry.
“Increasing intake of home-grown forages will be a priority for many producers, simply because the crop appears to be hampered by reduced intake factors, particularly as a lot of first cut silage has low dry matter and digestibility, and is lacking in sugars to get the rumen fermentation going.
“The inclusion of LactoBoost in a TMR will help minimise these issues, stimulating intakes through improving palatability. What’s more, it’s the perfect complement to Spey Syrup, a co-product from the Scottish whisky distilleries, that’s also high in energy and a good source of rumen degradable protein that the lactose sugar can complement,” he adds.
Trident Feeds are offering famers the opportunity to ‘try before they buy’ through the Big Tank Roadshow that is currently underway across the UK.
The LactoBoost tank is currently on a farm in Cumbria, with very positive results. It’ll shortly be making its way up north to a beef farm in Lockerbie. Farmers interested in trialling the product are encouraged to contact their local product manager.
